Honeymoon Swing is a five piece with drums, double bass, piano, guitar and violin; three of the members sing.
The band is based in Gloucestershire, UK, and has a well established track record, playing at some of the bigger dance/vintage festivals including Twinwood and Vintage Nostalgia, and prestigious venues like Highgrove House (sharing a stage with Jools Holland). Equally suited to swing dance clubs, smaller festivals, private functions and other smaller venues like bars, cafes and Bistros, Honeymoon Swing is versatile and can tailor a set to suit any event. It's all about the groove and the rhythm!
Honeymoon Swing play music that was made for dancing! Specifically, the American jazz dance styles from the 1920s to the 1950s.
It started with the Charleston (in Charleston). Then there was the Lindy Hop in New York, the Balboa in LA and the Collegiate Shag in the colleges of the east coast. These were the dance crazes that helped America through the great depression, the second world war and the affluent but troubled 1950s.
Here in the UK there's a new enthusiasm for these vintage moods and styles which have been embraced by the empty nesters, baby boomers and hipsters. The band play for an ever-growing crowd of flappers, hoppers, hep cats, shaggers and jivers!
The repertoire is based around classic swing tunes of the 30s and 40s, from the likes of Cab Calloway, Louis Armstrong, Bessie Smith and Al Bowley, with a bit of western swing, boogie-woogie and the occasional Latin number thrown in. A few more contemporary tunes have been adapted for the style, which can raise a smile.
Some well known tunes from the repertoire:
What a difference a day makes
Pennies from Heaven
I’m gonna sit right down and write myself a letter
It don’t mean a thing
Ain't nobody here but us chickens
A room with a view
Choo choo ch'boogie
Taint what you do it's the way that you do it
Sing sing sing
Jack I'm mellow
